SCD affects about 100,000 Americans, and 1 in 365 African Americans, shortens life expectancy significantly, and causes many health complications and pain crises. STRIVE is a volunteer organization in which teens living with SCD are paired with college students for individualized support and guidance through weekly phone calls and monthly group sessions and hospital visits. Most Next Step youth living with sickle cell disease participate for the duration of their high school career, building meaningful and long-lasting relationships with their mentors. To learn more about STRIVE or to sign up, email Jarrod Sheehan at dc@nextstep.org .
