Honors is going to Kenya and you should consider joining us!

WHAT: HONR238X Challenging Globalism: Mobile technologies for social responsibility
WHEN: January 2014 Winter Term
WHERE: Nairobi, Masai Mara, Lake Naivasha -- Kenya

We will have an informational meeting on Tuesday, May 7th from 6-7pm in Queen Annes Multipurpose Room.

This program is open to all students in the Honors College but space is limited. If you are unable to attend this meeting but interested in learning more, please contact Digital Cultures and Creativity (dcc-honors@umd.edu) as soon as possible.

Course Description:

What kinds of social responsibility makes sense in the 21st century? What does it mean to reverse the paradigm from infrastructures of aid and development to local participatory collaborations? How are Kenyans specifically doing this on a local level?

As leaders in emerging mobile technologies, Kenyan organizations have been at the forefront of pushing boundaries and demonstrating the way small-scale citizen movements can lead to large-scale social change.  This course will challenge expectations of how global leadership works and unpack in meaningful ways the role of the individual in addressing global-local paradigms. While in Nairobi  students in the Honors College at the University of Maryland will be introduced to innovative organizations and artists with a specific focus on developing collaborations through design research, media, art, conservation, and hands-on projects in the field.
