"Can Beauty Save the World?" - March 28

Guest lecture by Dr. Raymond Hain from Providence College

Thursday the 28th at 8:00 PM in the Prince George's Room of Stamp Student Union

Pope Benedict XVI once said that “art and the saints are the greatest apologetics for our faith.” Does this mean that beauty can save the world? If we think of “beauty”, alongside “truth" and “goodness”, as one of the scholastic “transcendentals,” then our answer should be a qualified yes. But in the end, all three are needed to save the world: the mystic, the poet, and the saint. To reflect more deeply on the relationship between these three, and their importance in our lives, we’ll consider in depth some examples from Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics, Shakespeare’s Coriolanus, and Tolkien’s “Leaf by Niggle.”
