The Diamondback’s news desk is seeking staff writers to begin working this fall. Apply at https://forms.gle/
Candidates who are available over the summer will be expected to contribute to breaking reporting before classes resume in the fall.
In the fall, staff writers are required to produce two stories per week and to contribute to breaking reporting.
All majors are welcome. The position includes a biweekly stipend of $56 in the fall semester.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Responsible for developing expertise on a university beat
Pitch 2 stories a week
Submit 2 stories a week
Pick up any breaking news stories/blogs
Contribute to collaborative/special projects
Time commitment:
Depending on the beat, up to 8 hours a week
Skills:
Clear and concise writing
Thorough reporting
Able to meet deadlines
Collaborative
Strong ability to determine what stories are newsworthy
Fact-checking
Basic knowledge of AP style
Diamondback staffers have interned and worked at the Washington Post, New York Times, Bloomberg, LA Times, Wall Street Journal, McClatchy, Politico, Dow Jones News Fund, Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association, Baltimore Sun, Frederick News-Post, Maryland Matters, Capital Gazette, NBC, CNN, NPR, USA Today, National Press Foundation, Daily Record, and more.
This application includes free-response questions, a writing test, a story pitch, and attachments of a resume and three writing samples. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
