Students who carry out Maryland Summer Scholars projects gain a competitive edge when applying for graduate study, fellowships, employment and other competitive opportunities. Many Summer Scholars turn their research into an independent study or honors thesis during their junior or senior year.

2016 US-UK Fulbright Summer Institutes

The US-UK Fulbright Commission 2016 UK Summer Institute application period is open! These summer programmes provide the opportunity for US undergraduates (aged over 18), with at least two years of undergraduate study left to complete, to come to the UK on a three, four, five or six week academic and cultural summer programme.  Participants in these programmes will get the opportunity to experience an exciting academic programme at a highly regarded UK University, explore the culture, heritage and history of the UK and develop their academic ability by improving presentation, research and communication skills.  Applications received after this date will not be accepted.
Theses Summer Programmes available for US students in 2016:
·         Scotland Summer Institute
·         Wales Summer Institute

Full details, selection criteria and application forms are available on our website.
·         Online application form:
The 2016 application form is now online.  A link can be found on the ‘Applying’ tab of each Institute’s website.  We highly recommend students prepare a draft application with the form provided on the website.  Application instructions and FAQs are available for reference.
·         Previous travel outside the US:
We state on our website that preference will be given to those who do not have extensive, recent experience in the UK. While your experience in the UK won’t preclude you from applying, you would be at a disadvantage. However, a strong application wouldn’t prevent you from being selected. We encourage anyone eligible and interested to apply for our awards.
  • Recommendations:  Students should direct their references to the link on the program webpage for an online reference form.  All references should be completed using this form.

Beyond the Classroom presents "Schools that Change Communities" on Monday, December 7th at 7:00 pm!

Monday, December 7th, 7:00PM-9:00 PM
South Campus Commons Building 1, Room 1102
(http://www.beyondtheclassroom.umd.edu/locationbtc.htm)

Schools that Change Communities profiles a diverse group of public schools that are successfully creating higher achieving students in a different way -- by turning the communities where they live into their classrooms. The film re-imagines what education can be, visiting K-12 public schools in five states across America that are engaging students in learning by solving real-world problems in a variety of communities, from economically and environmentally challenged rural areas to poverty-stricken urban neighborhoods. High school students in Howard, SD, build an interdisciplinary curriculum around a plan to save the town's struggling economy. In a Boston neighborhood with a high level of crime and poverty, students learn to connect the dots between what their community seems to the outside world and what it might become. In a small Appalachian town, elementary school students help clean up an adjacent stream polluted by acid mine drainage from former coal mines. In Watsonville, CA, high school students studying Roosevelt's New Deal try to come up with a New Deal for their farming community. In Cottage Grove, OR, students help create a sustainable environment, while learning valuable science, engineering and math lessons.  Teachers, students and local residents discuss their projects and the value they find in place- and community-based education -- an interdisciplinary approach which emphasizes hands-on, curiosity-based investigation using surrounding neighborhoods as "living" classrooms. By confronting and solving real-world issues in their hometowns, students become more engaged in the learning process and develop a stronger sense of civic responsibility and pride. Plus, the local communities benefit!

New Honors Seminar '16 HONR 378R/MLAW Risk, Security and the Rule of Law

SPRING 2016
New and Special Opportunity for Pre-Law Students!
(and open to other students as well)!

HONR 378R/MLAW Risk, Security and the Rule of Law
Brandee Pettus, Maartje van der Woude, visiting professor from Leiden University, Netherlands
Th 4:00pm - 6:30pm JMZ 2207

What choices are made by the legislature in the war on terror? How is the legislature contributing to racial profiling? How is it possible for countries in the EU to close their borders in the light of the freedom of movement all EU citizens enjoy?

This internationally oriented and interdisciplinary course introduces students to the rule of law framework for criminal justice issues. There with focusing on the early stages of the policy cycle: the stage of “agenda-setting” (deciding which social problems should be addressed through new criminal justice policies and laws) and the “legislative stage” (the stage of drafting and deciding upon specific laws and regulations).

From a political, criminological and socio-legal perspective the course addresses what social and legal dilemma’s political and legal institutions face while governing security, guaranteeing safety and handling (inter)national crises on the one hand, and protecting the rule of law in a democratic yet complex society on the other hand.

Maartje van der Woude is Associate Professor of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure at the Institute for Criminal Law & Criminology of Leiden University. Her current research aims at a deeper understanding of the process of crimmigration, the growing merger of crime control and immigration control. By studying the political discourse and legislation on both the level of the EU as well as on the Member State level – with The Netherlands as a case study – her project aims to provide insight into the interaction and complex dynamics between the level of supranational decision-making and the level of national decision-making.

Interested in teaching abroad this summer? Info Sessions 12/3 & 12/7

The final deadline is approaching (SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 14TH) for an amazing summer volunteer opportunity with the international non-profit organization Learning Enterprises (LE). LE sends young adults around the world over the summer to teach English in under-resourced areas. Each volunteer experiences true cultural immersion by staying with a host family who provides all essentials, like food and accommodation, thereby keeping in-country costs very low. Furthermore, LE charges no program fee, so although volunteers pay for their transportation, it's one of the most financially feasible ways to volunteer abroad! Volunteers are given a great deal of independence, creating and teaching their own unique curricula (a highly self-driven achievement to put on a resume)! I participated in the Hungary & Slovakia program last summer and it was easily the most incredible summer of my life.
Summer 2016 programs will be in China, Thailand, Mongolia, Panama, Brazil, Moldova, Poland, Crete, Hungary and Slovakia, Romania and Croatia, and Mauritius

The final application deadline is Sunday, February 14th! Our application is now open, apply here: http://www.learningenterprises.org/application-2.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis

Fill out this form go.umd.edu/UMD-LE if you’re interested, and we’ll send you updates on application deadlines, and on campus info sessions.
