Student Research Opportunity

We are studying mate choice in the bowerbirds.  We have taped the behavior of males and females (13 species) at their mating site (the bower) in their native habitats in Australia and New Guinea.  There are large skews in male success in mating with females and we are attempting to understand what males a relatively few males highly successful (mate with many females) and why females choose them as mates.

Volunteer students often start scoring behavior on video tapes and may then move onto working on their own project gathering and analyzing to address a particular question.  Students can obtain credit for doing this work.  Please email Dr. Borgia at
Borgia@umd.edu if interested in getting involved in this research.

Seeking a few good students for a weird new UMD class

The course number is CHIN429D and the title is "Selected Topics in Chinese Studies; Reacting to the Past: East Asia." It is a unique role-playing type course that has been offered at other institutions and which is particularly well-suited to honors college students.  In it, we explore three moments in East Asian History - "The succession crisis of the Wanli Emperor," "Confucianism, Westernization, and the 1894 Kabo Reforms in Korea," and "Japan, the West, and the Road to World War, 1940-41."  Each "game" requires students to use a central text in order to make in-class speeches to their classmates in order to sway them to vote or act a certain way.  These close readings in context give students a chance to really understand the complexities of historical problems and the unique ways in which they were approached based on traditional mores and those who sought to amend, subvert or modernize them.  Students interested in China, Japan or Korea are welcome, they do not need any prior knowledge of those countries or languages, but they need to be adventurous and rigorous.

Maryland Student Researchers Program - Fall 2015 Opportunities

ARE YOU AN UNDERGRADUATE INTERESTED IN EXPLORING RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES FOR FALL 2015 AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND?

Learn more about the Maryland Student Researchers program, and review nearly 150 available opportunities by visiting our website at: http://www.ugresearch.umd.edu/current-studentresearchers.html

The Maryland Student Researchers (MSR) program serves as a University-wide online bulletin board where UMD researchers post research opportunities for undergraduate students. It is a great way for undergraduates to learn about the rewards and challenges of academic research. Nearly 150 projects are listed with more being added so check back regularly over the next several weeks.

The MSR bulletin board is designed to help undergraduates find research opportunities that are a good fit for their interests and qualifications, and to help faculty members find students to assist with their research project(s).  The research opportunities posted on the MSR website typically call for students to spend around six hours a week working under the direction of a faculty mentor on that faculty member’s own research.  Participating students learn skills and gain valuable experience that will enhance their graduate school and job qualifications. Most positions are for volunteers, some are paid.

The Maryland Center for Undergraduate Research will hold numerous information sessions to assist students who want to use the MSR bulletin board to identify suitable research opportunities, and also to provide advice about additional ways to pursue research opportunities – space for each session is limited so please RSVP to ugresearch@umd.edu with the date/time of the session you plan to attend:
