Undergraduate Research Assistant Position Educational Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory

Who are we?
The Educational Cognitive Neuroscience Lab is currently seeking assistance from undergraduate researchers for the upcoming Spring 2015 semester. The laboratory is located in the Department of Human Development and Quantitative Methodology, 3304 Benjamin Building. The Principal Investigator of the lab is Dr. Richard Prather. Additional information about the lab can be accessed at: http://pratherlab.org/

What do we do?
We investigate children’s neurocognitive development with a primary focus on mathematical cognition and related processes. Current projects utilize both EEG and behavioral studies to examine these topics.

What will you be doing?
Undergraduate RA’s have a very important role in our research. RA’s working in the lab will gain experience recruiting participants, setting up experiments, and in data analysis. Additionally, RA’s are exposed to research methodology, as well as the logistics of running a study. This opportunity is ideal for students interested in graduate school, or those interested in gaining valuable hands-on research experience.

Requirements
Undergraduate RA’s are required to have at minimum a 3.2 GPA within their major and at least an overall GPA of 2.8. We prefer students to commit to 2 semesters in the lab. Students are also expected to work on lab-related tasks for 10 hours/week. We do offer course credit for your assistance.

Fall 2015 HONR100 Section Leader Applications Due: Friday, November 21, 2014

University Honors  is looking for talented students to teach HONR100 for fall 2015.  HONR100 is a 1-credit course for new Honors students and assists them in transitioning to the university.

Section Leaders are responsible for teaching and mentoring approximately 15 new Honors students through their first semester. The Section Leader creates lesson plans within the parameters of course goals and facilitates weekly discussions.  The Section Leader also grades assignments and maintains class records.

Students selected for the Section Leader program receive 3 credits for teaching HONR100. Section Leaders earn 1-credit for successfully completing a training course in Spring 2015. There are 2 sections for the course.  The first section will be Wednesdays from 4:00-6:00 p.m. and the second section will be Thursdays from 4:00-6:00 p.m.

The remaining 2 credits are earned in fall 2015 by teaching HONR100. Students must successfully complete the spring training course before teaching HONR100.  Section Leaders teach HONR100 either individually or in pairs.

Because Welcome Week is a part of HONR100 and counts toward course points, Section Leaders are required to participate in the events with their students. Welcome Week will be Aug. 26- Aug. 30, 2015.

Students must have completed at least one year at the University and have a 3.0 GPA to be selected for the Section Leader Program.

Interested students should complete this google form by Nov. 21, 2014 in order to be considered for an interview.  The form is short and should take only a few minutes to complete.

Application Link:
http://ter.ps/7ap

On the google form, you will be asked to briefly describe your interest in being an HONR100 Section Leader.

There will be a 2-round interview process.  The first interview will be informational.  It’s a chance for us to get to know you better and learn about your qualifications. Please bring a copy of your resume.

Applicants who successfully complete the first round will be asked to deliver a 5-10 minute presentation on a topic relevant to first-year students.  Potential topics include: time management, goal setting, stress management, academics, or whatever else you choose.

During the first round of interviews, we will reserve time for you to get feedback on your topic and advise on how best to engage your audience.  Only applicants selected for the second round of interviews will be asked to present.  So, there is no need to have the presentation worked out in advance.

If you have questions, you are welcome to contact Liza Lebrun at LLebrun@umd.edu

Help Send the Black Engineers Society to National Convention in California

The National Society of Black Engineers is one of the largest student run organization. The mission of NSBE is to help increase the number of minority engineering and STEM majors that graduate by helping them grow professionally, personally and academically by providing the support system needed to excel in the engineering field, especially as an underrepresented minority. I have been a member of the University of Maryland Chapter of NSBE ( known as the Black Engineers Society) ever since my freshman year and I can truly say that my academic and professional achievements are largely thanks to what I have learned from NSBE,

Every year there is a NSBE National Convention where chapters across the country attend. It is an incredibly empowering experience to see that many young, minority STEM majors all in one place. This year the convention will be in California. In the past our chapter has always been able to take a lot of members to experience the wonderful opportunities that National Convention provides. However, this year we are in danger of not being able to take any members because the high cost of travel is a burden that our chapter finances just cannot meet.

In an effort to raise money we have created a fundraising site through the university.

The link for our website is:  www.launch.umd.edu/blackengineerssociety

We have a goal to raise $9000. Every donation is appreciated and it is also tax deductible.

This Sunday the Jewish Student Union (or JSU) is having our annual 5k race!

All proceeds from this race benefit Save A Child's Heart (http://saveachildsheartus.org/), an organization working to save the lives of children with serious heart defects and complications. Because of donations from people like us, they are able to save a child's life every 29 hours.

The race takes place this Sunday at 11am (registration opens at 10) at the Chapel Fields on campus. You can register here: https://www.facebook.com/events/483235865152634/ It is a great event to come to - even if you are not running. ALL proceeds collected to go to Save A Child's Heart, and there will also be opportunities to get to know more about the organization there. This is a great way to earn community service hours while helping out a great organization at the same time!!

We can't wait to see you there!!
