AMST 298O: Digital Media and Cultural Politics in a Global World - Summer Session II

Interested in the politics of the internet? Want to learn more about how digital media connect people across the globe? Need to earn History and Social Science and Understanding Plural Societies General Education credits over the summer online?

Then check out AMST 298O: Digital Media and Cultural Politics in a Global World. This Summer Session II course taught by Dan Greene will review massive cultural movements spread online and across borders, whether as political projects (the Arab Spring, Occupy Wall Street) or pop culture sensations (Gangnam Style, World of Warcraft). We'll learn about the small corners of the Web where sexual subcultures make a home, and ask fundamental questions about what the internet is, who shapes it and how, and why a particularly precarious generation takes to the Web to make a space of their own. The course will take place online and students will use that space to its full advantage, exploring the politics of globalization as they play out in blogs, YouTube, and social networking sites, and designing research projects that focus on a border-crossing internet community of their choice. Questions about the course? Contact Dan at dgreene1@umd.edu for more info.

Joseph Mitchell and Michelle Humanick Memorial Scholarship

We are currently accepting applications and nominations for the Joseph M. Mitchell Memorial Scholarship Award. Applications and nominations for the Fall 2014 semester award are due July 1, 2014. All University Graduate and Undergraduate students are encouraged to apply.

The scholarship award was established in recognition of Joe Mitchell's compassion for the less fortunate members of our society and in honor of his ability to befriend, guide and mentor individuals whose ability to succeed as students at our institution was challenged by some personal or family circumstance. Scholarships will be awarded each fall and spring semester to one or more deserving students. These are one-time awards of up to $1,000 per recipient.

For the Fall 2014 semester, the Joseph M. Mitchell Memorial Scholarship will award an additional one time scholarship of $250 to honor the memory of Michelle Humanick, who passed away on July 25, 2010 from a car accident.  Michelle served 15 years with the Department of Resident Life, and was a beloved colleague and friend, an extraordinary designer and the founder and first Manager of Resident Life’s Design and Publications unit.  Michelle is remembered for her special talents for befriending, guiding and mentoring both students and full-time professionals with whom she worked.

During the Fall 2014 award process, students may apply to the Joseph Mitchell Memorial and Michelle Humanick Scholarships  through http://josephmitchell.umd.edu.  In addition to the one-time $1,000 Mitchell scholarship award, a second, one-time $250 scholarship honoring Michelle Humanick will be awarded.  Students will only be eligible to receive one of the awards.

If you have any questions or would like more information regarding the scholarship, please feel free to contact either Michelle McCubbin (mmccubbi@umd.edu, 301-314-9555) or Dai-An Tran (datran@umd.edu, 301-314-0416).

“Psychology and the New Heroism”

Beyond the Classroom Living & Learning Program
Critical Conversations on Civic Issues: “People Power” Series
presents the award-winning documentary:
“Psychology and the New Heroism”

  Monday, May 12, 2014, 7:00-9:00 pm
1102 South Campus Commons, Building 1

This series on People Power: Activism for Social Change is sponsored by
Beyond the Classroom Living & Learning Program, Office of Undergraduate Studies,
at the University of Maryland, College Park
WWW.BeyondTheClassroom.umd.edu

Philip Zimbardo is professor emeritus of psychology at Stanford University and creator of the renowned Stanford Prison Experiment. Daniel Ellsberg served in the Pentagon under Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara and is best known as the whistleblower who released documents known as the Pentagon Papers to the public which detailed the secrets and lies that shaped three decades of American foreign policy in Vietnam. These two icons of progressive thought in America met for the first time to discuss a salient question for our times: Why are some people willing to take courageous nonviolent action in defense of ethical principles, even at personal risk to themselves? This film captures their conversation and calls for a new era of truth-telling by citizens privy to crucial and often classified information that the public deserves to know. They call for a new ethic of accountability by those leaders who govern the United States, its judiciary and its military. They challenge ordinary people to take calculated risks in the service of their conscience and their fellow citizens. This defines the New Heroism.

• "One of the finest films I've seen...about a man who in 1971 changes his own life and took on the U.S. government at the ultimate cost to his career." -- Oliver Stone, filmmaker.
• “Daniel Ellsberg, once again, speaks truth to power, this time in dialogue with Philip Zimbardo. Their conversation recasts citizen engagement in a new light, and their call for a new ethic of accountability is especially timely as a new generation of whistleblowers attempts to redress what they see as a lack of transparency and a compromised privacy in the post-9/11 world." – Professor Carl Maida, University of California - Los Angeles.
