Honors Creative Writing Class - Spring '14

In the spring, Honors will offer HONR 349J "Reading & Writing Poetry," with Prof. Stanley Plumly, who is Poet Laureate of the State of Maryland.  Because there are only 12 spaces in the class and this is a special opportunity, we're asking that interested students apply for permission to register for this class.  The application is simple: Please send a one page, single-spaced attachment to honors@umd.edu explaining why you want to take HONR 349J.  Your statement should demonstrate your writing skills and the quality of your interest in taking this course. The deadline for best consideration is October 30, 2013.

From the course description: "This course will consist of a hybrid of critical and creative emphases. We will read, with intensity and intelligence, a wide range of poems, mostly contemporary. And we will write our own poems, sometimes by assignment, sometimes via our own inspiration. The core of the class will be conversation, analysis, and response. You will be graded as much on class participation as on your own written work, be it critical prose or original poetry.
We will write six short papers on particular poems, sometimes the same poem, sometimes individual choices. And we will write at least six poems for discussion in a workshop context. We will read, doubtlessly, more than we write.

Readings include: The text, in paperback, is THE BODY ELECTRIC (W. W. Norton, 2000), edited by Stephen Berg, David Bonanno, and Arthur Vogelsang"

About Namati

Namati is dedicated to putting the law in people’s hands. Grassroots Innovation
We partner with civil society organizations and governments to develop, implement, and evaluate legal empowerment strategies that address five urgent global challenges:
 Delivering quality legal aid at scale;

 Closing the enforcement gap in environmental law;
 Fulfilling the right to citizenship; and
 Ensuring that essential services like healthcare and education are accountable to local communities. Presently these grassroots justice efforts are in eight countries—Sierra Leone, India, Liberia, Uganda, Mozambique, Burma, Kenya, and Bangladesh.

A Global Network
Namati convenes an international community of practitioners committed to advancing justice. The network includes over 280 organizations from every region in the world. Members learn from each other and collaborate across borders. Together, we are building a stronger global movement for legal empowerment.

The world is watching developments in the Middle East with great anticipation and Harman will share her vision from the front row.
Harman is the first female director, president and CEO of the Woodrow Wilson Center and was most recently a nine-term U.S. representative for California who served on all major security committees: Armed Services, Intelligence, and Homeland Security.  She will share her insights into U.S. national security and public policy issues surrounding Israel and the Middle East.
Given the escalating national conversations about the Syrian conflict and chemical weapons, nuclear proliferation in Iran, political unrest in Egypt, and the latest iteration of peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians, this program is sure to be timely and insightful.

Justice and Health: How the Affordable Care Act is Fulfilling the Dream – Tue 10/29

The University Honors Program’s What Is Your Dream? programming series presents:

Justice and Health: How the Affordable Care Act is Fulfilling the Dream

Tuesday, October 29

4:30pm

Juan Ramon Jimenez Room, Adele H. Stamp Student Union

In Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous "I Have a Dream” speech, he describes the journey of black people from slavery to the promise of freedom. He said black people were given a "bad check" and the marchers were in Washington to demand payment. He also said that the people would "….not be satisfied until justice rolled down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream…” This forum, led by Dr. Stephen Thomas from the UMD Center for Health Equity and School of Public Health, will focus on how the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is indeed making good on a portion of that "bad check".

This event is free, and light refreshments will be served.

This event is co-sponsored by the University of Maryland Center for Health Equity headquartered in the School of Public Health. For more information about this event and Stephen Thomas, click here.

The program draws on a broad definition of national security, recognizing that the scope of national security has expanded to include not only the traditional concerns of protecting and promoting American well-being, but also the challenges of global society, including sustainable development, environmental degradation, global disease and hunger, population growth and migration, and economic competitiveness.

LANGUAGE STUDY: Boren Scholars typically include substantial language study in their study abroad programs. For a complete list of languages and regions please visit the Boren Scholarship website.

AFRICAN LANGUAGES INITIATIVE: Boren Scholarship applicants have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of, and proficiency in, African languages and cultures.
